You must have heard about VoIP by now, it's the latest discovery in modern communication. VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol is technology that makes it possible to transmit voice trough internet.

To fully understand how VoIP works, you first need to understand what is voice or sound in standard phone communication. Phones transmit analog signal, something similar to AC current, but with larger frequency, human can hear sound in range from 20Hz to 20000Hz, but voice or sound that we hear over standard phone is somewhere between 2000Hz and 5000Hz, why?, because not all humans can hear whole spectrum of frequencies. Now, VoIP can not use analog signal and transmit it across internet, because internet communication must be with digital signal, so you need analog to digital converter, and then you can start using VoIP, wright? Actually no. You need something else, and that something else is for example program like Skype.

Well, VoIP can be used with other programs also, and can be used with special VoIP phones, but never mind what program you use, you will need a VoIP provider. If you use special VoIP phone you can by it at computer hardware store but then you need to pay a VoIP provider for calling with VoIP. Next choice is to use microphone and connect it to your computer and then use software, but you'll still need VoIP provider, and this is where Skype comes in to the picture. Skype is one of the largest VoIP providers in the world. They offer VoIP communication for free when you communicate to people who are also there users. When you wont to call cell phone numbers or standard phone numbers you need to pay some amount of money. They use system of credits, like some cell phone companies.

Using Skype is very simple and straight forward. You will first register and set up an account, which is for free, you pay only for Skype Credit (if you wont or need). Then you can start using Skype and VoIP. Good thing is to test your internet connection, you can do that by taking Skype Test Call, which will be under contacts tab. You can search Skype database of users for person who you wont to talk with, search can be done by Skype Name, full name or email address. That is very good way for finding someone when you know that he or she has Skype account. Establishing connection is very easy, you just click on your contact and than click on green phone symbol, just make sure you are on line, and then talking can start.

To use VoIP you will need internet connection of any kind. Many will say that you'll need cable internet or DSL to use VoIP, but I use it on 56K dial up modem. Of course that sometimes, when connection is not good enough, some of voice is lost but generally, when connection is good, conversation is possible.
